Here's a sample of four different ways (systems) to look at a situation

1.  System is everything, and no friction
2.  System is everything, with friction (what does/doesn't change?)
3.  System is cart and spring - notice how the energy leaves the system through friction (some argue that there should be a little Eint since the cart heated up too, and that makes a lot of sense!)
4.  System is just the cart, notice how work is done to the system by the spring, but there are still the friction losses from the system just like in #3
